A tsunami is a series of waves created when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced. Earthquakes, mass movements above or below water, some volcanic eruptions and other underwater events have the potential to generate a tsunami.

The word tsunami comes from two Japanese words, "Tsu" for harbor and "nami" for wave or harbor wave. Tsunamis are the world's deadliest and most destructive waves. Sometimes tsunamis are referred to as tidal waves, although they have nothing to do with tides.
