The Freeplay Summit multi band radio combines the best of radio and self-sufficient energy technology, giving you reliable access to music and global information wherever you are. It is the lightest weight and most compact of the the Freeplay shortwave radios. The Summit has digital tuning which is a plus, as it is easier to use, especially for beginners. You can pick the precise station on the dial with no guessing required.
Personal note: The Summit is the successor to the venerable BayGen FreePlay Plus multiband radio. We have owned, and used, our BayGen for better than 8 years and it is still going great. Considering our family, these radios are rugged !
FreePlay's self-sufficient energy technology means it can operate from its internal NiMH rechargeable battery via a wind-up (crank) AC dynamo, integrated solar energy panel, or included AC/DC worldwide travel adapter. Not all methods are equal, though. A brisk 40 minutes of cranking will fully charge the battery. (30 seconds of winding will give you about 30 minutes of play.) Connecting to a wall outlet will produce a full charge in about 24 hours. And the solar panel needs roughly 40 hours of bright sunlight to charge the system.
Additional features include:
a clock
an alarm
an earphone socket for personal listening
a lock function for the buttons so you don't accidentally turn the radio on
and a low voltage battery cut off to preserve your station memory settings.
Also provided with the Summit:
a wind up wire, clip-on antenna (essential for SW, generally helpful),
an AC/DC travel adapter,
and an international shortwave guide.
