Holiday Lights New and Old

The "New" Way - Lights in Parallel

Two lights, two circuits. A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. A complete battery and lightbulb circuit. A complete battery and lightbulb circuit.
Two separate circuits can be constructed using a single electrical power source. Note that each light bulb is connected to the battery by its own circuit. Since the circuits are independent, when one bulb burns out, the other stays lit. There are many ways to hook up the wires to obtain a complete circuit for each light bulb. Bulbs in this type of configuration are said to be connected "in parallel." When a light bulb loses its filament, only that light goes out. It is clear which position needs a new bulb. Many bulbs may be connected in parallel. Most new light strings are designed with the lights in parallel. When one bulb burns out, the others remain lit. And, there is no question about which bulb needs to be replaced.
